Recently, the European CEO of smart brand revealed that the company is planning to launch the electric successor model of Fortwo, but the project has not yet received final approval and needs to prove its profitability.
Fortwo is smart's first model and one of the smallest models in the European market. After 26 years of production, the Fortwo has been discontinued and there is no direct replacement model yet. However, smart Europe CEO Dirk Adelmann confirmed that the company is developing an electric successor to the car. Adelmann said, "The current Fortwo has been discontinued two months ago. It would be great if there was a direct successor, but it is not yet available, but we are working hard." The car is internally codenamed "Project2" and is expected to Name it Elf #2.
Dirk Adelmann said: "The city car market in Europe is not large; Fortwo's best year sales were only about 100,000 units, but this is not enough to justify adopting the platform. We definitely don't want to produce a It’s a car that no one makes money on, because it’s not going to last long. We want this car to be a profitable project for us, for the retailers, and ultimately for the consumers.”
It is understood that the smart brand is 50% owned by China Geely Automobile. It is currently unclear which brand of Geely will become a partner of smart. We will continue to pay attention to and bring first-hand information about more information about the two-seater smart pure electric model.
